GCU Main Campus

Georgian Court University in Lakewood

Georgian Court University’s main campus was established in 1924, after the heirs of financier George Jay Gould sold the family estate to the Sisters of Mercy, who were looking for a larger campus for their women’s college in Plainfield, New Jersey. The 156-acre campus was designed in the 19th century to recall English estates in the Georgian style.

Today, the campus is a National Historic Landmark and home to the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum, which recently gained Level II accreditation from global organization ArbNet. The grounds, buildings, and gardens that once provided recreation for the Gould family are the home of a thriving educational community. At Georgian Court University, students from all backgrounds prepare for lives and careers of real meaning.
